Abstract: This Special Issue on “The Economics of European Agriculture under Conditions of Climate Change” brings together a selection of papers that contribute to the understanding of recent developments related to agriculture and climate change in four European coun- tries. The focus of the Special Issue is on quantitative modeling and empirical analyses. The papers presented here not only cover the heterogeneity of agriculture in Europe with case studies from the Mediterranean (Italy), central (Austria) and north-western Europe (Ireland and Scotland) but also give insights into the diversity of quantitative modeling approaches in agriculture.

Abstract: Climate variability (CV) normally influences production and farm management, and climate change (CC) has precisely the effect of changing this variability. Thus, models that estimate the economic impact of CC, integrating with climatic models, agronomic, and livestock, must represent the implications of this variability on farm management. This study describes an economic model based on Discrete Stochastic Programming (DSP) which assesses the impact of CC on milk production in the Grana Padano area. The model is based on 23 farm typologies from FADN that represent 856 farms in Piacenza and Cremona, two of the most important provinces for Grana Padano production. The results of the model were projected at the regional scale. The climate scenarios, current and future, are generated with a Regional Atmospheric Modeling System. The forage production under these scenarios is estimated with the EPIC agronomic model. Estimates on milk production and livestock mortality are based on studies conducted in the Po valley. The nutritional needs of the cattle are estimated with the CNCPS model. Probability distribution functions (PDF) express the relations between the CV and the productive variables under both climate scenarios. These PDFs represent the expectations of farmers on the productive-climate variability in the DSP model, which is PMP calibrated based on land distribution observed in a reference year. Comparing the model results in the two scenarios indicates the effects of CC, given the opportunity to adapt the use of resources and techniques of cultivation. Abstract: We will use Finland as an example of a small, developed country with difficult climatic conditions to show how changes in global food consumption patterns and global population growth will influence local production. In order to do so we use two different models. First, an agricultural sector model for Finland, and second, a regionally adapted version of a global, spatially explicit agroeconomic land use model. We use both models to investigate how Finnish cereals and oilseed production develops under different socioeconomic conditions, as defined in the Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). We find that without a major improvement of oilseed yields, oilseed production will be disrupted by 2050 and even with a major increase in oilseeds yields only in the SSP2 scenario production of oilseeds can be sustained. Cereal production on the other hand does not change in the simulations with the global model, but does almost decrease by half in the simulations with the national model. This shows that even with an enormous global population growth and reduced international trade, Finland will not become a major agricultural producer.
