Abstract |
Climate change has generated unpredictability in the timing and amount of rain, as well as extreme heat and cold spells that have affected grain yields worldwide and threaten food security. Sources of specific adaptation related to drought and heat, as well as associated breeding of genetic traits, will contribute to maintaining grain yields in dry and warm years. Increased crop photosynthesis and biomass have been achieved particularly through disease resistance and healthy leaves. Similarly, sources of drought and heat adaptation through extended photosynthesis and increased biomass would also greatly benefit crop improvement. Wheat landraces have been cultivated for thousands of years under the most extreme environmental conditions. They have also been cultivated in lower input farming systems for which adaptation traits, particularly those that increase the duration of photosynthesis, have been conserved. Landraces are a valuable source of genetic diversity and specific adaptation to local environmental conditions according to their place of origin. Evidence supports the hypothesis that landraces can provide sources of increased biomass and thousand kernel weight, both important traits for adaptation to tolerate drought and heat. Evaluation of wheat landraces stored in gene banks with highly beneficial untapped diversity and sources of stress adaptation, once characterized, should also be used for wheat improvement. Unified development of databases and promotion of data sharing among physiologists, pathologists, wheat quality scientists, national programmes, and breeders will greatly benefit wheat improvement for adaptation to climate change worldwide. |

Abstract |
The daily weather of the four decades were used as input to EPIC simulation model to test the effects on crop yield, crop evapotranspiration, number of days with water and nitrogen stress in the silage maize -Italian ryegrass irrigated cropping systems in the Oristanese case study area. The monthly DTR (diurnal temperature range) pattern predicted for the FC (future climate, 2020-2030) indicates that spring and summer months are the most sensitive to DTR increase. The increase ryegrass yield simulated by EPIC under FC was interpreted as the positive effects on increased temperature on the winter-spring grass growth rates. The decreased production of maize was attributed to a shortening of the crop cycle, which reduced the intercepted radiation. The simulations run to assess the pure effect of DTR shift indicated almost no effects on crop yield but significant effects on crop evapotranspiration, whose increase observed under FC was largely associated to DTR, particularly in maize. The stochastic generation of daily weather with WXGEN indicates a sufficient accuracy for average DTR patterns and the central part of the daily DTR distribution, while the range of absolute values increased substantially, in relation to the increased probability of extremes in one century vs one decade.(Abstract supplied by the publisher) No Label |

Abstract |
Agricultural product prices and policies influence the development of crop yields under climate change through farm level management decisions. On this basis, five main scenarios were specified for agricultural commodity prices and crop yields. An economic agricultural sector model was used in order to assess the impacts of the scenarios on production, land use and farm income in Finland. The results suggest that falling crop yields, if realized due to low prices and restrictive policies, will result in decreasing crop and livestock production and increasing nutrient surplus. Slowly increasing crop yields could stabilise production and increase farm income. Significantly higher crop prices and yields are required, however, for any marked increase in production in Finland. Cereals production would increase relatively more than livestock production, if there were high prices for agricultural products. This is explained by abundant land resources, a high opportunity cost of labour and policies maintaining current dairy and beef production. |
