Abstract: FACCE MACSUR comprises many different groups whose work contribute to improving the European capacity of modelling agriculture with climate change and providing an assessment of these impacts for stakeholders. Some groups work on methodological issues in a single discipline, others work on cross-disciplinary concepts. The meeting provided an opportunity for the members of the groups to meet for intensive discussions and exchange of ideas, which is not as easily done in phone or video conferences. Various groups also met with each other to agree on work plans and common settings for research. Overall, 105 researchers attended the workshops. For coordinating work with the global program AgMIP, AgMIP’s principle investigator John Antle attended the meeting and, meeting in a video call, coordination teams of MACSUR and AgMIP agreed to continue the successful collaboration in the future. Major overarching outcomes of the meetings were agreements on policy and climate scenarios recommended to be used within MACSUR, development of an approach to quantify effects of extreme climatic events on socio-economic indicators, and closer collaboration among several groups at the level of regional case studies.

Abstract: The daily weather of the four decades were used as input to EPIC simulation model to test the effects on crop yield, crop evapotranspiration, number of days with water and nitrogen stress in the silage maize -Italian ryegrass irrigated cropping systems in the Oristanese case study area.The monthly DTR (diurnal temperature range) pattern predicted for the FC (future climate, 2020-2030) indicates that spring and summer months are the most sensitive to DTR increase. The increase ryegrass yield simulated by EPIC under FC was interpreted as the positive effects on increased temperature on the winter-spring grass growth rates. The decreased production of maize was attributed to a shortening of the crop cycle, which reduced the intercepted radiation. The simulations run to assess the pure effect of DTR shift indicated almost no effects on crop yield but significant effects on crop evapotranspiration, whose increase observed under FC was largely associated to DTR, particularly in maize. The stochastic generation of daily weather with WXGEN indicates a sufficient accuracy for average DTR patterns and the central part of the daily DTR distribution, while the range of absolute values increased substantially, in relation to the increased probability of extremes in one century vs one decade.(Abstract supplied by the publisher) No Label

Abstract: Clover-grasses address the following objectives:– Decreased input use (N-fertilization), reduced dependency ofinorganic N => reduced GHG emissions– Possibility for increased protein content of silage, reduceddependency on purchased protein feed supplement (homegrown proteins, resilience)© Natural Resources Institute Finland– Better utilisation of farmland in the context of climate changein the north: Higher T – improved N fixation– Compatible with sustainable agriculture and sustainableintensification: more output with the same inputs / the sameoutput with reduced (non-renewable) inputs• In contrast: Shifting to silage maize increases N fertilisation– Major shift from grasslands to silage maize in e.g. Denmark 1. Small cost reductions in clover-grass cultivation, or clover-grasspremiums, may or may not increase clover cultivation- Their effectiveness is uncertain and subject to prices2. N tax is effective, but is not a suitable policy action in currentfinancial situation of farms (milk crisis 2015-2016)3.
