Abstract |
Local-scale climate scenarios based on ensembles of global/regional climate models for regional applications in Europe is a deliverable for WP4 ‘Scenario development and impact uncertainty evaluation’. We developed the integration of 21st century climate projections for Europe based on simulations carried out within the EU-ENSEMBLES and CMIP3 projects with the LARS-WG stochastic weather generator. The aim was to update ELPIS, a repository of local-scale climate scenarios, for use in impact assessment studies in Europe. No Label |

Abstract |
Climate sensitivity of GCMs was used to select 5 GCMs from the CMIP5 ensemble for impact studies in MACSUR2. Selected GCMs for MACSUR2 are EC-EARTH (7), GFDL-CM3 (8) HadGEM2-ES (10), MIROC5 (13), and MPI-ESM-MR (15). These GCMs are evenly distributed among CMIP5 (Fig 1) and should capture, in principal, climate uncertainty of the CMIP5 ensemble. Using 5 GCMs will enable us to assess uncertainties in impacts related to uncertainty in climate projections. The selection of GCMs in MACSUR2 has a good overlap with selections of GCMs used in CORDEX and AgMIP projects. We used the LARS-WG generator to construct local-scale CMIP5-based climate scenarios for Europe (Semenov & Stratonovitch, 2015). Fifteen sites were selected in Europe for MACSUR2. For each site and each selected GCM, 100 yrs climate daily data were generated by LARS-WG for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios and for baseline and 3 future periods: near-term (2021-2040), mid-term (2041-2060) and long-term (2081-2100). |

Abstract |
MACSUR’s foremost charge is improving the methodology for integrative inter-disciplinary modelling of European agriculture. In addition to technical changes, improvements include the involvement of stakeholders for setting research priorities, scenarios (if-then evaluations), and model parameters to more realistic or region-specific values. The Knowledge Hub currently brings together 300 members from 18 countries and has generated 300 scientific papers, over 500 presentations and 20 workshops and conferences within the first three years. Scientific results are communicated in conferences and workshops, where policymakers take part by invitation or because of professional interest. These events also provide opportunities for direct dialogues between policymakers and scientists. The primary form of output of the research network is scientific publications that are cited in policy documents by relevant administrative departments, ministries, intergovernmental agencies, and directorate-generals, and non-governmental interest groups. MACSUR members also contribute directly to policy documents as authors, e.g. the EEA’s indicator report on CC impacts or the IPCC’s 5th assessment report’s chapter on food security. |

Abstract |
The first TradeM workshop was held at Haifa University (Israel), 3-5 March 2013. It was a state-of-the-art Workshop ‘Economic Modelling on Agriculture with Climate Change for Food Security’. Sixteen papers are presented, following a call for abstracts submitted in December 2012. Presented, reviewed and discussed models, their inputs, outputs and main results of case-study analyses let indicate of how the model can be used to analyze the impacts of climate change on food security, how the model can contribute to, and benefit from other economic and/or crop and livestock models and what input is needed from CropM and LiveM. There were explored ideas for closer integration and linkage between agriculture and economic models and between economic models at different levels, addressing issues of model structure, scale and data processing. Focus was on model comparison, gap analysis, scientific advancements and improvements. We also addressed the key challenges of the economic models (macro- versus micro-economics; uncertainty versus risks; variability and distribution), and identified ways to cope with scaling, uncertainty, risks. The workshop let identify the requirements from CropM and LiveM, find policy questions that MACSUR is going to address, start with the content of the case studies and plan for publication of scientific papers. The sessions were broadcast live via the internet. Twenty-four registered participants and about 65 local visitors attended the workshop. This work was co-financed by NCBiR, Contract no.
