Abstract |
Crop production for feed dominates land use in North Savo in eastern Finland. The value of dairy and beef production is appr. 70 % of the total value of agricultural production of the region. In climate change adaptation research we are especially interested in dairy and meat sectors, which are directly dependent on the development of productivity of crop production. Climate change implies changes in cereals and forage crop yields and nutritive quality. There are most likely increasing problems and risks related to overwintering and growing periods. Grass silage is mainly self-produced on farms and most often there is no market for silage. Silage production and use are vulnerable to changes in local climate, because lost yield cannot be easily replaced from market. Risks and costs due to increasing inter-annual yield volatility can be reduced by good management practices, such as crop rotation, plant protection, soil improvements and better crop protection against plant diseases.However the profitability of such measures is dependent on market and policy conditions. Nevertheless new cultivars and species, as well as various options for production and risk management, are most likely needed in future climate. Some adaptations may have multiple benefits which however may realize only in medium or long run. It is important to safeguard the most important and obviously needed adaptations, and identify market and socio-economic conditions which inhibit farmers from necessary adaptations and lead to reduced productivity and increased production costs. Abstract |
Forage-based livestock and dairy production are the economic backbone of agriculture in many northern countries. In northern Europe and eastern Canada, forage grasses are commonly grown intensively for silage and hay as a part of crop rotation. In those regions, timothy (Phleum pratense L.) is one of the most widely grown grass species. Models that simulate the development of yield and nutritive quality have been developed for timothy, but the performance of different models has not been compared so far.In this study, we compare the performance of the models BASGRA, CATIMO, and STICS for the predictions of timothy yield at 7 sites located in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Canada. In addition to yield, model predictions of additional variables, such as leaf area index, specific leaf area, and nutritive quality are gathered on a daily basis. Observed data will be used for two distinct calibrations: 1) Cultivar-specific and 2) ”global”, using all cultivars. The performance of the models will be tested by simulating all sites and years with both the 5 cultivar-specific parameter sets and the global parameter set.The first results of the comparison will be presented with a particular emphasis on dry matter yield predictions.The results will provide information about the uncertainties related to yield predictions of different timothy models and calibrations, the strengths and weaknesses of different modelling approaches, and the sensitivity of models to cultivar-specific parameters. Abstract |
The sustainable intensification of farming systems is expected to increase food supply and reduce the negative environmental effects of agriculture. It is also seen as an effective adaptation and mitigation strategy in response to climate change. Our aim is to determine farmers’ and other stakeholders’ views on how higher crop yields can be achieved from their currently low levels. This was investigated in two stakeholder workshops arranged in North Savo, Finland, in 2014 and 2016. The workshop participants, who were organized in discussion groups, considered some agricultural policies to discourage the improvement of crop yields. Policy schemes were seen to support extensification and reduce the motivation for yield improvements. However, the most important means for higher crop yields indicated by workshop participants were improved soil conditions with drainage and liming, in addition to improved crop rotations, better sowing techniques, careful selection of cultivars and forage grass mixtures. Suggested solutions for improving both crop yields and farm income also included optimized use of inputs, focusing production at the most productive fields and actively developed farming skills and knowledge sharing. These latter aspects were more pronounced in 2016, suggesting that farmers’ skills are increasingly being perceived as important. |
