Abstract: An integrated modelling framework (IMF) is developed to analyse impacts of climate andpolicy changes on farm welfare and the environment. The IMF is applied on two contrasting grassland (south) and cropland (north) dominated Austrian landscapes. The IMF combines the crop rotation model CropRota, the bio-physical process model EPIC and the bio-economic farm model FAMOS[space] and applies combined climate change and policy scenarios. Changing policies reduce farm gross margins by -36% and -5% in the two landscapes respectively. Climate change increases gross margins and farms can reach pre-reform levels on average. Climate induced intensification such as removing of landscape elements andincreasing fertilization can be moderated by an agri-environmental program (AEP). However, productivity gains from climate change increase the opportunity costs for AEP participation.

Abstract: TradeM will organise a session to plan for the three regional pilot studies. Focus will be on the expected outcomes until early 2015 (e.g. progress in farm modelling, and other scientific advancements – uncertainty, model integration). In addition to the planning of the regional pilot studies for the remaining year in MACSUR, we will also elaborate proposals for the years 2015-2017. Moreover, the session will enable research groups to present and discuss their plans for cross-theme investigations.

Abstract: The AgMIP network started activities on intercomparison of global economic modelling at a time when MACSUR was not yet established. The achievements made so far are highly relevant for TradeM and several partners (Wageningen University, IIASA, PIK, University Bonn) are in both networks. The MOU between MACSUR and AGMIP established formal links between the two projects and TradeM is activley working on establishing further collaboration. Preparations are underway to bring together researchers of both networks in a joint workshop to be held in Austria, September 2014. The topic will be on issues related to linking local and regional models with global ones. TradeM will actively contribute to the workshop and will host a one-day side-event.

Abstract: Moving towards a more sustainable future requires concerted actions, particularly in the context of global climate change. Integrated assessments of agricultural systems (IAAS) are considered valuable tools to provide sound information for policy and decision-making. IAAS use storylines to define socio-economic and environmental framework assumptions. While a set of qualitative global storylines, known as the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs), is available to inform integrated assessments at large scales, their spatial resolution and scope is insufficient for regional studies in agriculture. We present a protocol to operationalize the development of Shared Socio-economic Pathways for European agriculture – Eur-Agri-SSPs- to support IAAS. The proposed design of the storyline development process is based on six quality criteria: plausibility, vertical and horizontal consistency, salience, legitimacy, richness and creativity. Trade-offs between these criteria may occur. The process is science-driven and iterative to enhance plausibility and horizontal consistency. A nested approach is suggested to link storylines across scales while maintaining vertical consistency. Plausibility, legitimacy, salience, richness and creativity shall be stimulated in a participatory and interdisciplinary storyline development process. The quality criteria and process design requirements are combined in the protocol to increase conceptual and methodological transparency. The protocol specifies nine working steps. For each step, suitable methods are proposed and the intended level and format of stakeholder engagement are discussed. A key methodological challenge is to link global SSPs with regional perspectives provided by the stakeholders, while maintaining vertical consistency and stakeholder buy-in. We conclude that the protocol facilitates systematic development and evaluation of storylines, which can be transferred to other regions, sectors and scales and supports intercomparisons of IAAS.
