Abstract: Regional agricultural yield assessments allowing for weather effect quantifications are a valuable basis for deriving scenarios of climate change effects and developing adaptation strategies. Assessing weather effects by statistical methods is a classical approach, but for obtaining robust results many details deserve attention and require individual decisions as is demonstrated in this paper. We evaluated regression models for annual yield changes of winter wheat and silage maize in more than 300 German counties and revised them to increase their predictive power. A major effort of this study was, however, aggregating separately estimated time series models (STSM) into panel data models (PDM) based on cluster analyses. The cluster analyses were based on the per-county estimates of STSM parameters. The original STSM formulations (adopted from a parallel study) contained also the non-meteorological input variables acreage and fertilizer price. The models were revised to use only weather variables as estimation basis. These consisted of time aggregates of radiation, precipitation, temperature, and potential evapotranspiration. Altering the input variables generally increased the predictive power of the models as did their clustering into PDM. For each crop, five alternative clusterings were produced by three different methods, and similarities between their spatial structures seem to confirm the existence of objective clusters about common model parameters. Observed smooth transitions of STSM parameter values in space suggest, however, spatial autocorrelation effects that could also be modeled explicitly. Both clustering and autocorrelation approaches can effectively reduce the noise in parameter estimation through targeted aggregation of input data. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: In boundary layer flows, it is now recognized that the net momentum and mass exchange rates are dominated by the statistical properties of ejecting and sweeping motion often linked to the presence of coherent turbulent structures. Over vineyards, three main factors impact the transport properties of such coherent motion: presence of sloping terrain, variations in leaf area index (LAI) during the growing season, and thermal stratification. The effect of these factors on momentum and heat transport is explored for three vineyard sites situated on different slopes. All three sites experience similar seasonal variation in LAI and mean wind conditions. The analysis is carried out using a conventional quadrant analysis technique and is tested against two models approximating the joint probability density function (JPDF) of the flow variables. It is demonstrated that a Gaussian JPDF explains much of the updraft and downdraft statistical contributions to heat and momentum transport efficiencies for all three sites. An incomplete or truncated third-order cumulant expansion method (ICEM) of the JPDF that retains only the mixed moments and ignores the skewness contributions describes well all the key properties of ejections and sweeps for all slopes, LAI, and stability classes. The implication of these findings for diagnosing potential failures of gradient-diffusion theory over complex terrain is discussed. Because only lower order moments are needed to describe the main characteristics of the JPDF, the use of the Moving Equilibrium Hypothesis (MEH) to predict these moments from the locally measured sensible heat flux and friction velocity is explored. Provided the planar fit coordinate transformation is applied to the data, the MEH can describe these statistical moments at all three sites regardless of terrain slopes and LAI values. Abstract: Continuous crop rotation modeling is a prospective trend that, compared to 1-crop or discrete year-by-year calculations, can provide more accurate results that are closer to real conditions. The goal of this study was to compare the water balance and yields estimated by the HERMES crop rotation model for present and future climatic conditions in the Czech Republic. Three locations were selected, representing important agricultural regions with different climatic conditions. Crop rotation (spring barley, silage maize, winter wheat, winter rape) was simulated from 1981-2080. The 1981-2010 period was covered by measured meteorological data, while 2011-2080 was represented by a transient synthetic weather series from the weather generator M& Rfi. The data were based on 5 circulation models, representing an ensemble of 18 CMIP3 global circulation models, to preserve much of the uncertainty of the original ensemble. Two types of crop management were compared, and the influences of soil quality, increasing atmospheric CO2 and adaptation measures (i. e. sowing date changes) were also considered. Results suggest that under a ‘dry’ scenario (such as GFCM21), C-3 crops in drier regions will be devastated for a significant number of seasons. Negative impacts are likely even on premium-quality soils regardless of flexible sowing dates and accounting for increasing CO2 concentrations. Moreover, in dry conditions, the use of crop rotations with catch crops may have negative impacts, exacerbating the soil water deficit for subsequent crops. This approach is a promising method for determining how various management strategies and crop rotations can affect yields as well as water, carbon and nitrogen cycling.
