  Abstract (down) Employing a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Spanish economy, this study aims to characterise the potential impact of Kyoto and European Union environmental policy targets on the Spanish economy up to 2020, with a focus on the agricultural sector. The model code is modified to characterise the emissions trading scheme (ETS), emissions quotas and carbon taxes, whilst emissions reductions are applied to all six registered greenhouse gases (GHGs). As extensions to this work, the study attempts to integrate the use of ‘Marginal Abatement Cost’ (MAC) curves for emissions reductions within the agricultural sector, and econometric estimates of the effects of global warming on land productivity in Spain.

  Abstract (down) Ectopic cystatin expression has long been used in plant pest management, but the cysteine protease, targets of these inhibitors, might also have important functions in the control of plant lifespan and stress tolerance that remain poorly characterized. We therefore characterized the effects of expression of the rice cystatin, oryzacystatin-I (OCI), on the growth, development and stress tolerance of crop (soybean) and model (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants. Ectopic OCI expression in soybean enhanced shoot branching and leaf chlorophyll accumulation at later stages of vegetative development and enhanced seed protein contents and decreased the abundance of mRNAs encoding strigolactone synthesis enzymes. The OCI-expressing A. thaliana showed a slow-growth phenotype, with increased leaf numbers and enhanced shoot branching at flowering. The OCI-dependent inhibition of cysteine proteases enhanced drought tolerance in soybean and A. thaliana, photosynthetic CO2 assimilation being much less sensitive to drought-induced inhibition in the OCI-expressing soybean lines. Ectopic OCI expression or treatment with the cysteine protease inhibitor E64 increased lateral root densities in A. thaliana. E64 treatment also increased lateral root densities in the max2-1 mutants that are defective in strigolactone signalling, but not in the max3-9 mutants that are defective in strigolactone synthesis. Taken together, these data provide evidence that OCI-inhibited cysteine proteases participate in the control of growth and stress tolerance through effects on strigolactones. We conclude that cysteine proteases are important targets for manipulation of plant growth, development and stress tolerance, and also seed quality traits.

  Title Do modellers dream of electric sheep? – Practical to mathematical and back again Type Conference Article

  Abstract (down) Disease agents, whether viral, bacterial or parasitic, infecting grazing domestic animals represent a significant threat to livestock health and welfare and to food security, globally. In addition, inefficiency in production due to sub-clinical disease adds significantly to a farm’s environmental footprint. Projected climatic changes over the short-medium term have implications for livestock pests and pathogens, both directly and indirectly, and will result in changing disease patterns e.g. incidence, seasonality and geographic spread. An area where interdisciplinary collaboration is mutually beneficial, and essential in order to gain a better understanding of the interactions between climatic change, pathogen dissemination and livestock productivity is between ‘fundamental’ or ‘practical’ livestock researchers and modellers. To facilitate this collaboration, there needs to be a dialogue between both parties on the data depth, quality and format required to populate different models to ensure relevant and appropriate outputs. An example of where this type of collaboration has been used is work using an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)-compliant model (CPLANv2) to calculate greenhouse gases (GHG) associated with fattening lambs over five consecutive grazing seasons. The results demonstrated that effective control of sub-clinical/clinical parasitic gastroenteritis resulted in a ~10% reduction in GHG emissions/kg live weight gain (Kenyon et al., 2013).

  Abstract (down) Development efforts for poverty reduction and food security in sub-Saharan Africa will have to consider future climate change impacts. Large uncertainties in climate change impact assessments do not necessarily complicate, but can inform development strategies. The design of development strategies will need to consider the likelihood, strength, and interaction of climate change impacts across biosphere properties. We here explore the spread of climate change impact projections and develop a composite impact measure to identify hotspots of climate change impacts, addressing likelihood and strength of impacts. Overlapping impacts in different biosphere properties (e.g. flooding, yields) will not only claim additional capacity to respond, but will also narrow the options to respond and develop. Regions with severest projected climate change impacts often coincide with regions of high population density and poverty rates. Science and policy need to propose ways of preparing these areas for development under climate change impacts.
